Can't Hurt Me

David Goggins

CHM

Book Description

For David Goggins, childhood was a nightmare -- poverty, prejudice, and physical abuse colored his days and haunted his nights. But through self-discipline, mental toughness, and hard work, Goggins transformed himself from a depressed, overweight young man with no future into a U.S. Armed Forces icon and one of the world's top endurance athletes. The only man in history to complete elite training as a Navy SEAL, Army Ranger, and Air Force Tactical Air Controller, he went on to set records in numerous endurance events, inspiring Outside magazine to name him "The Fittest (Real) Man in America."

In Can't Hurt Me, he shares his astonishing life story and reveals that most of us tap into only 40% of our capabilities. Goggins calls this The 40% Rule, and his story illuminates a path that anyone can follow to push past pain, demolish fear, and reach their full potential.

My Key Takeaways

Life is tough, but it can be so much worse. It was so much worse for someone like Goggins, who, despite all setbacks and every single element working to his disadvantage, he has become a proclaimed 'hardest man on the planet'. He has pushed himself to become a person he would have never thought possible as a Navy Seal, Army Ranger, Ultramarathon Runner, World Record Pull Up Holder and more, and in 'Can't Hurt Me', Goggins outlines his story alongside techniques and strategies to become more disciplined and get after the life you want. Being more disciplined, being truthful to yourself, looking yourself in the mirror and having an honest assessment, and challenging yourself to do more and be more are several of the things I took from the book. We can all do better and be better, and our mind is the primary limiting factor. We should seek to be uncomfortable daily to challenge ourselves to grow. Your mind will always try to find the easiest path, and it's up to us to push ourselves towards the harder path through reprogramming. This is OUR mind, and we are the ones in control of our destiny and what we will do with our lives.

The Compound Effect

Darren Hardy

compound

Book Description

In 'The Compound Effect', Darren Hardy reveals the core principles that drive success, and presents a distillation of the fundamental principles that have guided the most phenomenal successes in business, relationships, and beyond. This is an easy-to-use, step-by-step, no gimmicks, no hyperbole, no magic bullet operating system that allows you to multiply your success, chart your progress, and achieve anything you desire. It is based on the principle that decisions shape your destiny and how little, everyday decisions will, by default, either take you to the life you desire or to disaster.

If you're serious about living an extraordinary life, you must use the power of this book to create the success you want. This book will teach you how to: Win—every single time Get rid of your bad habits, some of which even you might be unaware of Get yourself to do things you don’t feel like doing Recognize and utilize the powerful but elusive force of momentum Easily inculcate in yourself the important disciplines necessary for major breakthroughs Secrets that make super achievers accelerate past you on the road to success, amongst much more.

My Key Takeaways

Every little thing we do compounds and impacts our future. There is a ripple effect of both good and bad habits, or better put, habits that move us more towards or away from the person we are trying to become. We must own what we are in control of in our lives and our relationships with others. We should also choose to set luck aside and realize that where we go in our lives is solely determine by what luck really is, which is preparation, the right attitude, a window of opportunity, and taking action leading to luck. The real secrets to success are hard work, discipline, and good habits, compounded over decades of time. The key is to start now.

The Millionaire Fastlane

MJ Demarco

Book Description

Has the "settle-for-less" financial plan become your plan for wealth? That plan sounds a little something like this:

"Graduate from college, get a good job, save 10% of your paycheck, buy a used car, cancel the movie channels, quit drinking expensive Starbucks mocha lattes, save and penny-pinch your life away, trust your life-savings to the stock market, and one day, when you are oh, say, 65 years old, you can retire rich."

Since you were old enough to hold a job, you've been hoodwinked to believe that wealth can be created by blindly trusting in the uncontrollable and unpredictable markets: the housing market, the stock market, and the job market. I call this soul-sucking, dream-stealing dogma "The Slowlane" - an impotent financial gamble that dubiously promises wealth in a wheelchair.

Accept the Slowlane as your financial roadmap and your financial future will blow carelessly asunder on a sailboat of hope: hope you can get a job and keep it, hope the stock market doesn't tank, hope the economy rebounds, hope, hope, and hope. Do you really want hope to be the centerpiece of your family's financial plan?

Drive the Slowlane road and you will find your life deteriorate into a miserable exhibition about what you cannot do, versus what you can. For those who don't want a lifetime subscription to "settle-for-less", there is an alternative; an expressway to extraordinary wealth capable of burning a trail to financial independence faster than any road out there. And shockingly, this road has nothing to do with jobs, 401(k), mutual funds, or a lifestyle of mediocrity.

Demand more. Change lanes and find your explosive wealth accelerator. Hit the Fastlane, crack the code to wealth, and find out how to live rich for a lifetime.

My Key Takeaways

This has been the most impactful business book in my career - arguably more impactful than my entire bachelors education in business. In The Millionaire Fastlane, MJ Demarco highlights the three road trips to wealth - the Sidewalk: A path of being poor and spending everything today because there might not be a tomorrow, the Slowlane: A path of mediocrity where we save everything today for a better tomorrow, or the Fastlane: a true path to wealth. The Fastlane is about solving problems, and changing from team consumer to team producer. Business and wealth is about solving problems and helping people by providing value, and this can be accomplished in many forms. The goal is to build business systems that help solve problems at scale, which in the end will provide you with wealth. Money is really just value vouchers that we receive for helping people and solving problems, and this book discusses the many different business systems and ways to scale and solve problems in order to get on the path to the Fastlane.

Tools of Titans

Tim Ferriss

titans-1

Book Description

"For the last two years, I've interviewed more than 200 world-class performers for my podcast, The Tim Ferriss Show. The guests range from super celebs (Jamie Foxx, Arnold Schwarzenegger, etc.) and athletes (icons of powerlifting, gymnastics, surfing, etc.) to legendary Special Operations commanders and black-market biochemists. For most of my guests, it’s the first time they’ve agreed to a two-to-three-hour interview. This unusual depth has helped make The Tim Ferriss Show the first business/interview podcast to pass 100 million downloads.

"This book contains the distilled tools, tactics, and 'inside baseball' you won't find anywhere else. It also includes new tips from past guests, and life lessons from new 'guests' you haven't met.

"What makes the show different is a relentless focus on actionable details. This is reflected in the questions. For example: What do these people do in the first 60 minutes of each morning? What do their workout routines look like, and why? What books have they gifted most to other people? What are the biggest wastes of time for novices in their field? What supplements do they take on a daily basis?

"I don't view myself as an interviewer. I view myself as an experimenter. If I can't test something and replicate results in the messy reality of everyday life, I'm not interested."

"Everything [in this audiobook] has been vetted, explored, and applied to my own life in some fashion. I've used dozens of the tactics and philosophies in high-stakes negotiations, high-risk environments, or large business dealings. The lessons have made me millions of dollars and saved me years of wasted effort and frustration.

"I created this book, my ultimate notebook of high-leverage tools, for myself. It's changed my life, and I hope the same for you."
